Flash Back Australia Training Camp...

Tonight is masters swimming, however I had no luck finding a sitter...My best option was to swim this morning while Kainoa is in preschool. No worries. My plan was to go for a nice long ocean swim. Coach Paul had a better idea (better for him not me).

He gave me the EXACT same swim set that ROYALLY KICKED MY YOU KNOW WHAT one day during the Australia swim camp. When I saw it "again" flash backs of seeing Laura Bennett and the ITU girls lapping me (long course) came flooding back!

So to the pool I went. Confession, I sat on the side of the pool for 15 minutes hoping to talk someone into swimming with me. I convinced Rob to do the 24x50's with me, then he got out and timed one of my 100's, then he left. In between every set I looked around for someone, anyone to join me. Kevin and Jahn swam in the lane next too me making fun of me while they kick. It wasn't fun. Running and biking is so easy for me to do solo. BUT swimming, oh dear God save me!

Every lap I grew more convinced that if I had a SwimP3 I would be able to tackle swimming solo. I was imaging Shaggy, Chaka Demus, Tony Love, and Bob Marley swimming laps with me- that would be GREAT! Might even make me flip turn faster...

Just in case you have to miss your masters workout one day and need a set... here HAVE mine:

600 warm up/mix
24x50 on 60 (drill, use the drills specific to your needs)
200Swim

Mainset:
600 steady
6x100 swim on 1:20
4x50 easy on 50

400 swim solid effort
4x100 on 1:20
4x50 easy on 50

200 solid effort
2x100 on 1:20
4x50 ALL OUT on 1 minute

200 easy

Now, here is my question, because I am convinced a SwimP3 must be the coolest thing since sliced bread. Does anyone have one and if so, do you like it? Can you really hear tunes under water? Is it easy to use? Worth the money? Do you hate it? Just don't know anything about them, so if you like yours (or don't) please give me the scoop.

I've heard nothing but good things about the swimP3. LOTS of people like it. Too much $$ for me though.

And... I've told you that I will babysit! Give me a floor to sleep on and I will babysit any time you need!!!

Hey Bree, I have a swimP3. I used to use it a lot when I was injured and could only swim and did most of my pool swimming alone, and when I did long ocean swims at Ala Moana. You can hear the sound under water, it's not a perfect sound, but it does have better sound quality than I expected. I don't know if I still have mine (haven't used it in over a year or two?), but if I do, you can test it out. Heck if I have it still you can have it because I never use it anymore.

Hi Bree,

Just stumbled across your blog and it is really great..definitely motivating and a glimpse at what it takes to train like a pro! Anyways, in regards to your post, I have a H2O Audio waterproof case. You put an ipod inside of it and its completely waterproof. I love it and its definitely made my swimming much easier and enjoyable. Give it a try! Keep up the good work and good luck with the upcoming season!

Wow! wow wow wow. That is an awesome workout!! (minus the drills, boring...). I can see why you wanted some company :-)

Hmmm, maybe if I get my distance up I'll give it a shot, with some Melissa-friendly intervals.

Bree...I have one and I never use it anymore. I never loaded new songs and Andrew had put a Beatles and a Grateful Dead CD on there and it was defninintely not good swimming music. If Maggs can't find hers, let me know and you can have mine. It would make me feel good to see it getting some use.

That is an awesome workout. Just hit my Masters Group for the first time this year and felt surprisingly good. Give me a few weeks and if you need someone to swim with I will offer my services. Just let me know about 3 days in advance so I can fly in from Minneapolis. I will find any excuse to get to somewhere warm right now.

I agree on needing people to swim with... I like the set. Maybe we'll do it (or a version of it)Friday morning! :)

No experience with the music while swimming. I always just get a song in my head and then repeat one line over and over and over... ugh.

Okay I'm going to try this one! It does look tough.
I have a friend on Masters who loves her SwimP3 but the music comes through your skull bones or something wierd...not your ears.. so you have to know the song to "hear" it. I'd rather just swim with music blasting on the deck.

Paul gave our swim group an 'Aussie set' today too!

I have a swim MP3 player. It was about $60 Cdn.

It might be too distracting for hard workouts?
I have just used it when swimming on my own.

Oh, My, Gosh!!! What a workout!!! Not only is the distance far, the times are unreal. I would have to double the times to be able to finish the workout!!! Way to go on completing 2 so far. Somehow I think Coach Paul will have you doing it again next February if not before :) Did you use your new K Swiss shoes for more speed?
You are going to have a great year Bree, keep up the great work :)

I have a waterproof Shuffle from swimman.com. It's fun, but the earphones do give a some drag. That's probably just on me though because I have crazy flip turns that make the earphones move. It's definitely small though and you can hear it underwater.

Hey Bree, as you know music is my steroid of choice so of course I have a waterproof housing for my ipod for swimming. When the ear plugs seal just right it sounds like you are at a concert and the whole pool is one big speaker. When they don't seal right it sounds kind of muted. It's pretty weird the first time you swim with music.

I'll try to bring it to masters on Friday and you can try it out if you want.

PS. Masters was canceled tonight because of the storm.

That is one hell of a workout. I never thought about a pro athlete having to find a sitter. That really opened my eyes. Thanks

As far as the underwater MP3 player--I have a water proof case for my nano (http://h2oaudio.com/waterproof_armbands_and_cases.php) with the waterproof ear phones. I highly recommend it for swimming solo.

I hear your pain on swimming solo- i haven't done it in at least 6 months... i dont usually get much out of it.

that workout is awesome! and the pool looks pretty nice too.

Oh, I want a Swim P3 as well. I could really jam out on some Van Hallen and Aerosmith in the pool. Great workout. It sounds almost as fun as the workout I have lined up for the pool tomorrow.

OK, I could NEVER do that swim set. Ugh.

I have a SwimP3 that I've never used and don't want to use. I think I need to concentrate on all the little things I do wrong during my swims instead of singing along to music, cause I would do that, underwater and all! If you want, I'll sell you mine, seriously. Never been in water. I was going to sell it on ebay, but if you need it, FaceBook me! :)

That swim set looks gnarly!! But fun! Maybe I'd need to set the 100's to something like 1:25 though... ;)

It would be pretty sweet to have some music going while swimming - but then again, I need to focus while swimming or I get all willy nilly with my form...

Just listen for the dolphins when swimming, you can hear them without carrying an i-pod. Since I swim in a pool here, I just enjoy listening to the sound of splashing and focus on what I am doing rather than music. After the swimming I find a nice spot to work and listen to the birds, and there are plenty of them. I listen to music on my Macbook when I don't need to concentrate 100% and that's about it. If I get bored swimming in a pool I can play the music in my head from memory. What's the difference between that and real music?
I agree swimming is not much fun alone. There is usually one other person in the 50m pool at the same time as me and I swim one or two lanes from him. You know we reserve a lane just for you, too!

I have an older SwiMP3 that I won through a contest a while back. The sounds is great underwater (not so good in air because it works via bone conduction) and is perhaps the only thing that kept me swimming while I hated it so much. The 128mb memory it came with provides about 2 hours of music but the newer ones have 256mb so you should have plenty more muslc to select from. I used mine nearly every time I swam until last year when I started focusing on technique, enjoying swimming and found it distracting. I'd give you mine since I no longer use it but unfortunately it no longer plays on one side.

I don't even know what to say Bree..that is ONE heck of a swim workout but you did and that is just plain awesome! I have often wondered about those swim MP3 players too. It seems people like them, I'm just always trying to focus on good form so I am not sure if I could do both if I was jammin or not!! Either way, take these people up on their offer to send you one to try - what the heck!! Great job again..!!! you rock!!

If I did 100's on 1:20, I would be 10-15 seconds late every 100 :-) I've heard good things about SwimP3 too, but I have a hard enough time now as it is counting laps :-O
