BIG Shark...

A little run, a little swim, a BIG shark. I never saw the shark, coach landed me in the pool today so I only heard about the 12 footer hanging out at the 3rd buoy. The thing about the ocean swimmers around here, they always call it like they see it. It's not like crying wolf back on the mainland, if a shark was spotted, a shark really was spotted...
Speaking of big sharks, we all have them. Call them fears if you want. In sport our sharks can be, "ocean swims, the competition, big hills, cold water, long run courses, the heat, attempting to qualify, racing for paydays, big waves". The list can get pretty big if you let it, like a shark. I'm coming to find at most all the races these sharks and more are all out there, every time. Much like swimming here on the island, the sharks are always there. Slowly I'm discovering they aren't exactly out to get you, eat you, and spit you out, they just exist in the same place at the same time, like a race day. In most every case, if you don't look for your sharks you won't even see them, fears are those things that most the time are only visible if you actually focus on them.
Tomorrow it's off to Panana 70.3, first race of the season. If I was shark hunting you can bet going in for this race is much like attempting to actually go swim with the Great Whites in South Africa. PLENTY of sharky things could land on my list, from the flight to the competition, to missing my family and son back home. I'm going to try a different approach this season, it's all about enjoying the ocean swim without shark hunting. I seriously am excited to fly, to travel, to race, to hurt, to lose and catch my breath, to push hard, pace smart, and of course cross another finish line...
AND you will never believe when I get home, VALENTINES DAY! How perfect is that?! What a way to begin 2012, Panama here I come!!
Face the sharks!!
