The Simple Must Haves... and the link for the socks...

The image “http://media.rei.com/media/v/1256453.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

There was once a time (about a year and a month ago) when I swore I would never do an Ironman... at the finish line of Hawaii 70.3 talking to Rachel to be exact.

But life happens and here I am in knee deep (or thigh deep this week) in the training of Ironman #3. Thinking about HOW IN THE WORLD IS MY BODY MAKING IT! I have come to conclude it is the "simple must haves" that are making it a little easier...

Of course none of it would be possible without my awesome supporters, coach, family, friends (including blog buddies), and all the BIG stuff (like my bike and Asics and Splish suits)... but everyday daily stuff requires "the simple" things.

Here are some of my FAVORITES that I totally trust to help me through...

  • Tiger Balm (extra strength!)
  • Calf compression tights-Never sleep without them...
  • Bar wrap (any color BUT black)
  • Nuun electrolytes, DAILY, a few times a day!!!
  • Epsom salt baths, ice baths, and Alba sea salt scrub
  • Hawaiian Island Creations sunscreen (only kind made in Hawaii and works ALL day in Hawaii)
  • TP massage stuff
  • Dawn Henry Massage (1x a week!!) and ART from the AWESOME Nancy in Kona!
  • My tempo trainer and HR monitor (but only because coach makes me)
  • My blender and juicer
  • 101 swim lessons from coach Steve (must have!!)
And that's it! Those few little things make everyday just a little less painful and a little more do-able. Wishing everyone happy-healthy-injury free training days!

Hope this helps:
  • Here is the link for the compression socks, I REALLY like the ones that go to the hip too, BUT one suggestion is to order them a size too small because they run a little big. Link for the socks: http://www.zensah.com/
  • Compression socks increase blood flow, keeping them oxygenated, and can help reduce the pain/soreness of micro tears. People all wear them for different reasons but I use them because they feel like a little massage and cool down the aching pains I have and Charley Horses I wake up with in the middle of the night in my darn calves. I started using them about 4 years ago because James Cotter gave me a pair of black ones and anything Cotter did or used I copied because he was the stud of Hawaii... I still have the ones he gave me too!

Hey Bree, I just read your Monday post. Your first paragraph fits me perfectly, except you were the one that told me about race day magic, which really does work. I'm sure all my injuries before Lavaman and Hawaii 70.3 were due to the same reason - just doing what everyone else was doing.

I can ride Thursday as long as we are done before 8 a.m. (I have to take Rebecca to be fitted for a new wheelchair at 8:30). Let me know if that works.

See you tomorrow at 101. Oh, and nice seeing you out on the road today.

Michael swears by Tiger Balm, too! It smells...um...*strong.* But he loves it. Maybe I'll try it next time I have a sore spot, too!

I LOVE THE ALBA stuff, Bree...it is my favorite stuff ever! Harder to find out here, but it is sooo good. I love Nuun too - and of course, compression socks - I laugh my butt off b/c I walk around in them sometimes in the evening and people come to the door - especially the kids' friends - and their eyes bug out. Mine are black. I WANT A PINK PAIR - those are actually "cute"!!!

Hmm, I think those compression socks look pretty kinky. I should get some!

I'd like to hear more about the compression socks too. I sometimes get calf cramps when I'm lying in bed, I'm not sure if it's from lack of electrolytes, fatigue, poor foot posture or something else. Why did you start wearing them?

Hey Bree...love your blog. I'm doing IM Canada as well! Just got back from training in Penticton and boy is it beautiful!

Anyway, just curious, what are the benefits to compression socks?

Thanks!

Laura

Where in the world do you get the pink compression tights?! Mine are black, BORING, and ZERO fun! Seriously, if I am going to geek it out with the compression tights, they might as well be fun, right?!

Bree- Have you ever heard of Floating? There is a place in Minneapolis where you lay in tubs filled with 600lbs of Epsom salts and float for an hour. I've only tired it a few times but its great for recovery.

Pink compression tights will now be flying of the shelves!!

Happy Training!

I'm with Flatman - what's the benefit of sleeping in compression socks? I only ask because I feel like it could help me and my calf (and achilles).

I LOVE Alba stuff - their scrus and lotions are great. And smell wonderful. Keep on keepin' on with the recover stuff - sending great vibes your way! Thanks for the support - I appreciate it!!

I love the Alba products. All I use anymore! And I swear by my compression socks too..but in black or white, not much of a pink gal...I'm more for orange. I keep meaning to try icebaths, but I'm a huge wimp! If you are ever in NY City you have to find a Jivamutki yoga center and try some of their China Gel (or get some online, but shipping to Hawaii is a fortune)...much better than Tiger Balm and a lot less smelly

I'm with Flatman....I'd like to hear more about the compression socks. I guess it's my boring old black bar tape that makes me slow. :-)

The moment I saw those pink compression socks... I was sold! I have the boring black pair as well! Zensah is about to become one of your new sponsors after this blog I bet! :) I love hearing about the little stuff that people do that helps them! I think it's great for us to share in those little things and learn from one another!

Sounds like i'm with the rest of everyone else and is a little interested in checking out these compression sleeves.

I'm a little disappointed that the online store doesn't have pink. I think I'd look pretty hot crawling in to bed with those puppies on. Haha.

I do love Tiger Balm. It was my best friend when I was doing Cross Country in High School, but I had a few bad experiences after using it and going to the bathroom without washing my hands!

Talk about a stud! Tell me if you like thee book...good reading on your way to Canada!

I'm all about the Zensah compression socks. Mine are black, because I'm a boy and not queer...

Several of my friends swear about tiger balm. I don't use it as I don't have any injuries (just a swimmer!). At night I sleep in very expensive blankets that give off a negative electric charge when you move. It's a Japanese secret to health.

Hi Bree Wee,
I'm a new reader to your blog and i just love it! I wanted to wish you good luck in Canada! Love the compression socks!

Thank you for the update on the socks. The only bummer is I went online and I can't find them in any color but black, also they are sold out right now on the website. Seriously I hope they call you soon to sponsor.

I will be trying them out as soon as I can get them!

Wow, James' compression sox must really stink now, haha! Bree, please email me if you have any concerns about your nutrition. I know you are a smart and well-balanced woman and you are the picture of a perfect a healthy triathlete! Staying balanced and in tuned with your body and of course faith! Proverbs 16:9 is a great verse to refresh your mind. :)
