Ke kai hala'i lana malie...

The calm sea floating peacefully, that's what "Ke kai hala'i lana malie" means. I only know it because Kainoa is learning Hawaiian Language and I'm trying my best to learn it with him so he quits looking at me like I'm dumb for not having a clue what he is saying when he says all those words to me! The sea was calm, as in not choppy, but it had picture perfect swells rolling in. Beautiful in so, so, so many ways! The the dolphins came to play and that made it even better. Lucky for me, the swim was recovery, that meant coach gave me freedom to play, to splash, chase dolphins, enjoy the ocean without having to race through it.

This week was one of the most mentally challenging weeks I've ever embraced in sport. Some days were so long, others required mental alertness as if I needed to have the skill of making a bat have contact with a ball or a ball go through a hoop or kick a ball into a goal, that kind, not just swimbikerun. ALERTNESS. It did wear me out. One workout took an entire day to finish, another took all the strength my legs had to get up a giant hill, a few took my noodle arms to new lengths...it was another world in my tri-life. This morning was the run to tip off the top of the week. It started pretty mello then rolled into a game of chase with Kiet, the Asian Filippino karate kid that has been schooling me all training camp week long! Queen K was no match for us, it was like my engine was on (let's hope and pray it stays on for race day)! And after that....ocean float time...follow the dolphins time. The above photo is the view of a dolphin draft. I'd like to confess, I did however end up with dolphin poop in my mouth only moments after snapping that shot...lovely.
The beauty of the ocean never ceases to amaze me, I'm always along for the ocean rides, swims, floats, and anything & everything in between. Speaking of any & everything in between...I got a little surprise coming to me Thursday that will make the ocean even more fun! I'll tell ya later about it...might need to actually run it by coach first, shhhhhh....


I am so blessed to have the life I have, the laughs I share, the smiles given to me, and at the end of this week it's easy to look at all the hard work and say, "I loved it all". Personally, thank you to my coaches, Steve for the swims and Jimmy for working so close with me and changing things up as motherhood and other "hoods" call first...

Just Breathe, Hold Tight, Don't Let Go...

Finally had time to cliff jump today! YEAH RIGHT...I WISH! I jumped in bed for nap is all I had (barely) time for. It's like a training camp around here with a Filipino Asian boy that is kicking my rear into gear! My friend Kiet is training with me, our training goes something like this: Here is my plan from coach, can you do it, all of it with me? And that's the way it goes.

First up was the pukey part of the day. 16x400 with 200 easyish jog between, nonstop, and not harder than the goal pace and not easier (if I'm running slower than the goal I'm too tired and I had to skip it, I don't like skipping, so I made myself make it). Well, actually we didn't make the first one...we were 5:09 pace-too fast, the grass loop and the Garmin were Honu (Hawaii 70.3) training friends today and they kept us honest. Our friend tried to get our photo and we must have been way too fast because she only got an elbow. By the time we got on pace it ended up being my best speed session of the year. I loved the grass loop, finding the pace, making it happen, and holding on tight to the goal...

After the cool down it was ride time...hot and windy. Nothing left to say about that. Then lunch (all I could eat) to try and recover & store up for the swim. Not sure what happened after that, just remember looking at my watch and thinking I had 2 hours till swim, I woke up and had 15 minutes!

Coach Steve let me jump in with the high schoolers, its never easy with them. Kona is home of the fastest youth swimmers in our state. I wanted a floaty, actually I just wanted to survive. The main set was a 4,800 yard IM. Really...as 1200 of each stroke. 200fly drill (no problem), then 200 fly-2x150 fly, 3x100 fly, 4x50 fly. You had to progressively get faster and you COULD NOT do free, must do 2 hand touch on the walls, and no single arm. Oh yes I made it, trying my best to look like a real butterflyer but sometimes looking more like a kid learning to swim...then into the 1200 back stroke. My entire goal was for Keahi to not lap me...back stroke is my slowest stroke and literally I go backwards. The breast stroke no problem, I even got to take the lead. Now my arms are off, my legs sort of remind me of a jelly fish, and my eyeballs want to pop out...but training camp is going AWESOME!

After that, dinner with some friends, bed, then wake up to do it all again! Swim practice with the sun up, then bike all day, and finish with a run. I'm so excited about it...really. Because this feeling of, "Are you serious, one more day, another one, one more training session, how?" Keeps being answered with, "I can do it, hold on, breathe, just hang tight".

Watch For Chickens on Napoopoo...

Oh yes, today was the day...Napoopoo hill repeats. I love riding South so much, it's beautiful, it reminds me of what Hawaii must have been like a hundred years ago. It's so much fun and so untouched in certain areas. But it ain't easy riding where it's breesy...

Today I recruited some of the guys who aren't in taper mode going into Hawaii 70.3 (Honu), they are the ones that wanted to suffer and hurt and push on because like me, Honu isn't our "A" race. Getting into the groove of training through and focusing on my goal races is getting easier. I'm learning to race a little fatigued, learning to race as strong as I can with what I got on the day, and I'm learning to look at the bigger goal and let the smaller pieces just sort of "happen" and go with them as best as I can...so we rode...up a big hill...3 times....
The way to the hill was all sorts of "be strong" moments, as just getting to the hill is a climb out of Kona. Then we get to the hill and have to ride ALL THE WAY down, (my least favorite part). The view is just lovely, however no time to admire it because random chickens love to jump out all over the place and when flying down a hill on a bike you better be on the look out for those or you'll become lunch meat with them! Going back up the hill we rode tempo pace, super strong and smart...knowing it was 3x I had to be wise not to go too hard, but didn't want to play "Sally Save-Up" and save till the last round, it was all about balance today.
The deal was...feed the boys for keeping me company. SO... all you could eat breakfast at my house was the paybacks for the bike training company. Kiet and Ville totally earned it riding with this crazy girl today. THANK YOU A MILLION BOYS! And of course, swim practice into the evening...what a way to top off a Wednesday. I've got about 16 hours more to go this week. The body is in one piece, feeling feisty, feeling strong, feeling a little sore in some places but all good at the same time, (its the good sore). More food, more sleep, more feet up between training sessions and I'm gonna make this week happen without coach kickin' my @$$.
Happy Training!! Oh and if you need avocados or mango, they are handing it out down south, free to a good home, of course I filled my jersey pockets and carried an extra 15 pounds of fruit home on that ride...well worth it!

Youth Of Hawaii....

There is a spot in my heart especially for the youth. It's been developing over time and just gets a bit bigger as I see Kainoa growing up. It began on a mission trip teaching in Central America to a bunch of children left on the streets by parents who didn't know what to do with them, they were put into a shelter to live till somebody, anybody would come pick them up. Some days you just cry because you want to take them all home, other days you are not even teaching because nothing is even getting in their heads, instead all you do is hug them till they stop feeling the pain of being left behind without knowing why.

Veterinary medicine was my first major in college, then I switched to marine biology...after that trip I ultimately switched to teaching. And from there landed in Hawaii working with the youth of the Big Island. Oh some days were so frustrating, like pulling teeth. Other days you wanted to stay in the class all day because things were going so well and you felt like you were making a difference.

2008 teaching and I said our goodbyes and here I am living a dream racing triathlon. You better believe my heart still thinks of all the children that ever walked into my class. Of course teaching is always going to be there and in this moment I'm loving the life I have with sport, however, if there was some tiny way to still help, (because my plate is too full to do as much), it would settle that restless teacher in me for the moment. AND then this:

The Kona California Scholarship! Odie Sumi, one of our islands top "water men" and his friend had a dream a few years ago, "to provide a way for the youth of Hawaii to get off the rock if they want to for an education". You can click the link and read all about it. Thanks to Odie giving me an opportunity to be one of the ambassadors for Hawaii, you better believe without even thinking it over I said yes! The scholarship raises funds for high school graduates that wouldn't be able to even think about college without support, so the Kona California Scholarship raises money and selects 3 winners each year who will have a little help making their dream of an education possible.

I am so happy about this, it's dear to my heart. This weekend I was able to see a lot of the high schoolers that are part of our swim team graduate, it was incredible (graduation rate in the islands isn't that big, and those that attend college is very slim). Today we took a visit to the middle school and there I saw a handful of my former 3rd graders. It was a good day, (wrapped in hard training to make it painfully perfect again today).
.
Anyways...the scholarship has taken over that little "help the youth" spot in my heart. Knowing my son is growing up here I want more opportunities for him too. So finally, after all this time (you know how most pros donate or race for a cause), I finally found one I want to raise for...this Kona California Scholarship. That means I get to donate a part of my race earnings to the youth of Hawaii. The other goal is to launch another Wahine Bikini ride, like we did last year to raise funds. I'll fill you in on that later, we have till December to get the funds in...
Tio and I, he was a favorite student. I had him in tears because I never let him give up and he had me in tears because he never gave up...

And of course a little fun with Wendy's students...because the youth are so cool, excuse the poor video uploading skills, find the play arrow and click on it, it works...

Love up and encourage a child, you might be the only one that helps them believe and everyone needs to know somebody believes in them!

PS!! Another cool thing happened today, the REV3 Costa Rica Triathlon registration opened today! That's the good news...the sad part is, it will fill up fast, hurry up if you are considering this race! Happy Training & Happy moments with children!!

It's Like This & Like That...

Haaaaaaaaay! I think I've landed face first into that "sweet spot" in life...the hellish days make me love this kind of day ALL the more!! Home from a sunset and now the feet are up listening to a little "Rebel Souljahz", Angel girl is playing and it just makes me smile. Relaxing! This week is going to hurt all over again, and again, then some more...it's a VERY full load so I'm appreciating this "feet up" moment for all it's worth!

The weekend was a lot of running, a double run Sunday that saw me land on my bed napping with Kainoa most the day. The morning run was long and all the "highs and lows" found their way into my mind and legs. About 3 times that "suck it up princess" motivational talk we give ourselves took over. Another few times that, "How much longer" popped into mind, however, there were those wonderful, blissful moments that I was on cloud nine. Those moments where you feel like you could run forever, the ones you feel strong & fast, the ones you think to yourself, "I want to run like THIS on race day". The moments you just love running and you are reminded why you do it. Those moments.

Refuel & an Ice bath. It was the worst ice bath I've ever had. The water has to be 48-52* to really do the trick so I figured I'd need 8 seven pound ice bags (in case some ice melted by the time I got home), and let me tell you I was screaming. Little Kainoa came in and said, "Don't worry mom, it will warm up soon". Oh I love that boy...then he tried to stir the water for me, resulting only in him splashing and me in frozen shock, I don't like cold water, AT ALL.
.
Then a little run & a dinner date with my son & a few of the people I love most in the world. I really loved Sunday, painful & perfect.

Floating On...

About all I can do is float right now. That lovely, leg smashed silly feeling is lingering in my legs. Thanks to a long ride yesterday followed up by a tempo ride then speedy run off the bike today...floating is all I could manage. Tomorrow run long...
.
On the bright side, the feeling I have going on is how I feel about mile 13 in a marathon off the bike, so I'll consider tomorrow PERFECT practice for race day. If you live in Kona and happen to see me "shuffling along" don't worry about me, I'm okay, I'm just running on legs that want to float and I'll manage, keep on going and leave the mess of me to practice.

Training...That's it, Really...

Wearing hats, cliff jumping, playing at the beach, surfing, slumber parties, camping, watching stars late at night, getting up early to sit on the beach and eat cereal, renting movies at Block Buster, swimming through coral caves, fishing, playing on boats, making big dinners, baking with Kainoa, hanging out at Boarders, listening to Kawika play ukulele, taking pictures, painting, making up dances to songs that I don't even know the words to, and laying in hammocks, those are a very few of my favorite things. Those are the things I toss in here and there and sprinkle into my life as much as possible...
.
Lately, its looked A LOT like this... wearing an ugly helmet, earning bad tan lines, drinking a lot of things from water bottles & eating weird bars, swimming in a pool, watching the lights turn off at 8pm, getting up early to not sit on the beach with cereal, falling asleep half way through a Block Buster movie, no slumber parties, making really quick dinners because I'm so hungry after a long training session, listening to the same songs over and over on the IPOD, being thankful KSwiss hooks me up with free shoes because I seem to be going through them weekly, sitting on a bike seat more than sitting anywhere else all together, and enduring pain in the form of ART (not painting) and massage...
.
Honestly though, who am I kidding... I love it.
Today was my most challenging run in the last few months. The kind that you have to triple the amount of ice in the ice bath afterwards. The kind that you just lay on the living room floor because even getting in the bed to recover hurts too much. The kind that I didn't even use my legs in the ocean during the swim...just arms this morning... the kind that I am begging for a massage, the nice kind though. That's how it's been around here and I'm not sure who is more tired at the end of the day...me or Kainoa...we both sleep like babies!

Today In The 808 State...

Welcome to my locker room, its where all the stuff is kept to get me through a day at the office. Today my locker STINKS like sweaty bike shoes, old socks, banana peels, and a swim suit that needed to be hung outside to dry. It's bad. But I love it...

First up was a swim to the Iron Buoy and back. My co-workers were amazing, a group of 7 of us started together, but like most offices everyone has their own "desk". I ended up with Karlyn all the way out and back and let me tell ya, she was all business and it hurt pretty good working with her (she has over 200 masters records you know...) Nothing like showing up for work in a swim suit and slippers. Our guests were a manta ray and 3 dolphins...beautiful!
From there it was just me and 64 miles worth riding along Queen K, interval style. I'd love to tell you about the views and show you photos but I was too into my job today, really. It was all sorts of "meeting deadlines" and "no lunch break" kind of work. From there it was run. Again, nothing to show for it but some disgusting tan lines and horrible smelling socks.
.
The day hurt so much, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. About 3 times today I was thinking that if I had an aid station walking it would feel so good, but I sucked it up, got the job done and I know that if you can do that on a training day when you are all alone and nobody would even know if you slowed down, walked, or went home early then come race day it will pay off. SO me and my office finished all we had to do and by the time I punched out I was in pain all over and smiling some goofy grin because I love-love-love what I do, so much.

And just so you know, the 808 state has a little saying... "What happens in Hawaii stays in Hawaii". Sometimes I think that makes all the sense in the world...because you just can't give away all your secrets or tell the things that really make your heart flutter or the ruckus you caused. But other things aren't so bad...they just happen in Hawaii like no big deal...
Like giant purple cakes on the beach...
When your swim partner just takes off her top (like mine did today) because it's causing a rash and its not very freeing, and besides nobody can see we are so far from shore...
Or when all the girls on the swim team decide to get thongs and hit the beach...
And the time we stayed up past our bed time, yeah, that's my hand on my head wondering how I will wake up after a night that long in my whole life!

Tomorrow a long ride and a swim...the office is looking inviting! It's total focus time since I have a BIG day coming June 5th...

On a Pineapple Kick...

I'm loving all things pineapple lately...even eating them at the beach, underwater! This little kick happened last week when I was given some bromelain. Bromelain is an enzyme taken from the juice and stem of a pineapple that helps inflammation, pain, and swelling of the muscles. Not only is it getting my legs back running it helps with the nasal, congestion, sinus challenges, and breathing that we do everyday...and... about right now with the VOG at an all time high on the island it's making the outdoor running a little easier too.
Here are some quick pineapple facts for you:

The pineapple is a good source of dietary fiber, Thiamine, Vitamin B6 and Copper, and a very good source of Vitamin C and Manganese. It has 82 calories per cup, 1 gram of protein (not much) but it helps the body break down and better use protiens.

I would like to give a shout out to the beautiful yellow and green super fruit that I hold partly responsible for this mornings Sunday run, it was the least painful and most "run" feeling run in a few weeks! Yummy, Yummy, Happy to be a runner!

A Swim on ALOHA Friday...

Last night I did something crazy, I swam with fish. Well, they were more like Kona Aquatics Age Group team, about doubly as fast as the masters team, make that triply as fast. It went something like this: Push ups. (Bree lands on her face). wow...that really hurt. About the time the push ups are over and we do those insane get-outs where we "get out" of the pool (push up style on the side of the pool) up to our waist, on the BIG side by the way, not the little gutter side, my arms felt like they just swam, A LOT. This is not complaining, this is the honest bitter truth that I have some endurance but little arm strength...
.
Then we swam 5,600 yards (about 2,600 more than my usual pool swims). And it was all challenging, mostly fly, mostly holding on for dear life (like the 6x200 IM's) fast. It was incredibly intense swimming with the kids of Kona. I was old enough to be their mom... they were fast enough to make 200's on 2:30 fly, back, breast...and breaking the minute in 100 backs and flys like I break eggs for breakfast. Humbling-yes. Fun-when it was over. I dragged myself out of the pool and fell asleep like a baby last night.
.
Woke up this morning to a wet swim suit for morning practice, (you know morning swim is going to hurt when your suit is still soaked from just a few hours ago). And it did... after a 1,000 warm up it was 30x100 and the boys put me first with my mangled arms from those push ups (I was struggling just to lift my arms over my head). After 15 of them holding 1:06 and a couple 1:07 my brain forgot to count and my eyes got goofy. I told myself "this is like the Ironman, last 1,500 yards to go...hold it together", so I asked one of the boys to take over the lead, sort of wish I stuck it out in front, as if I was swimming solo between packs (because that always happens to me), but I wanted to pull off a good swim rather than float through the last 15.

The game became "get his feet" and I pretended I was dropped from the pack and had to sprint the first 25 to catch the pack, then I swam on feet the last 75. It worked like a charm-almost barfing to catch feet the first 25, holding on the last 75. It was giving me 1:02's- 1:04's. Brilliant...after cool down that was it, ALOHA Friday swim was pau and it was time to RECOVER!
We did breakfast on the beach: Egg, chicken, spinach burritos & Papaya with blueberries! Perfect...and in bikinis to make it more fun! BECAUSE every weekend should begin in a bikini. After a long sleepy recovery in the early morning hours on the beach we were feeling better. Feeling really blessed to tell you the truth, to be able to swim, to be active, to be healthy...

Then it was time to laugh...and we did. When Kona has 40% off bikini's you better believe everyone and their mom, grandma, and auntie are in the shop! The mission was to help our friend pick out a suit for his girl friend...ha ha ha... LOVED every minute of it! My favorite kind of shopping is grocery shopping or farmers market, today I changed my mind, bikini shopping with boys is so much fun! They make you laugh (and not at your pale white booty in something too small) but at them! I wish every Friday in Kona was super sales on bikinis! It's the worlds best recovery!
Tomorrow me and the bike will tackle some hills. The arms take a break and the legs will get a smashing...love it! Good night from the land of bikini's :)

Give Me A Pineapple!

Sometimes you gotta let go to feel alive again... it sucks, believe me. I'm a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve and speaks out loud whatever is happening in my head and heart, (gets me in heaps of trouble more times then not), but I think it keeps me real. Now I feel like racing. Its like a juicy pineapple, I just want to bust into it and go for it, 3 races are on my horizon and I'm happy training for them, the journey is what it's all about right!?

Yesterday's bike ride did not start fun. I tried to get out the door before the sun woke up and I landed on my @$$. Really. The back skewer came out and the back wheel ran into the breaks and jammed up in the derailleur and me on my @$$. Thankfully the wheel smashing into the breaks caused my speed to hit a whopping 4mph so I saved myself from any serious wipe out.

Jason came to fix up my bike and decided to start his ride, (even though he wasn't awake just yet), to make sure the bike and I were in one piece. After a long warm up coach gave me 2 hours of tempo. The warm up was where Jason wanted to reconsider riding with me, I sung every song I know as loud as I could, then he asked if I knew rap, (because I don't and that would silence me), little did he know I could make up my own rap, and so I did. He about fell off his bike, I about fell off mine laughing, and then it was tempo time. I was on a mission, I wanted to race him, every time he would try to get next to me I would try harder to keep in front, not sure what was happening, the pineapple's I guess... It was a good training day...sung through swim practice too, because if I wasn't making myself laugh, yesterday was a day I'd be crying...
Woke up ready to run, it was all I could think of, not even the ocean called my name. Strange. It felt like I was running on Lanai, I'm not sure I saw any other runners out there I was so focused on finding my run again. Every run it gets closer and closer and I hope by 3 weeks (Honu) it will be home to me. I'm trying to remind myself to relax and let it happen on it's own, not rush it, but I want my run legs back all the way. Patiently awaiting my legs recovery after the morning run I sat at the Harbor watching dolphins splash and play, it really reminded me to relax and breathe. Till then, I'm on my way now to see Nancy (Makai Chiro/ART), her and Dawn (Healing Island Massage), have been working their magic. Then...swim practice with the high schoolers-OUCH.
